THE OTHER SIDE
OF “ON MY WAY.”

Bob, Bobby… Bobbert?

One coffee. One topic for the podcast. One very reasonable question about a very unusual name.

Bobbert, 37, is listening to Whatever Happened to the Pizza at McDonald’s when Josh arrives at The Citgo. Josh needs something to talk about at tonight’s podcast. Bobbert’s name seems like a promising start.

“Rob, Robby, Robert — Bob, Bobby… Bobbert? I don’t know man — my parents were hippies.”

Gordy, the owner, interrupts with a question about the disappearing Wild Bill’s beef jerky. A glass jar, a hoodie and a mistaken identity later, Josh notices A Fall Before Forty on the new book rack. Bobbert suddenly has very little to say about Barnes & Noble.

Outside, Josh is mistaken for a criminal and tackled by police. Somehow, the Wednesdays Without Josh hoodie is part of the problem. That explanation is still to come.

A Fall Before Forty.
or How I learned to stop worrying and love Gordy

A week later, Bobbert owes Josh an apology. It isn’t the apology Josh is expecting.

Josh thinks Bobbert means the incident with the police. Bobbert means Barnes & Noble. Of course he knows what it is. He’s an aspiring writer who persuaded Gordy to sell books at the counter, even though Gordy still thinks the rack is a dumb idea.

The secret: Bobbert wrote A Fall Before Forty and slipped it onto the rack. He has more writing projects—and much more to hide behind that counter—than anyone realizes.

Josh leaves for the podcast, hits a broken gin bottle and punctures a tire. The car veers into a field, where a rock punctures the gas tank. Meanwhile, scavenger hunters Ted and Ed are driving around debating Ed’s latest list: the Top 10 Songs to Die To.

“What the hell is wrong with you man?”— Ted, before joining the discussion

A trail of gas eventually brings Ted and Ed to Josh. What happens after they find him is the next part of the story.

TED & ED.

Two scavenger hunters. One ongoing list. A very specific pair of role models.

They call themselves Ted and Ed in tribute to their favorite TV characters, Bob and Doug McKenzie, who also appear in Strange Brew. Their scavenger-hunt drive is about to intersect with Josh’s much less successful drive to the podcast.
