Wednesdays Without Josh / Around town

WELCOME TO
KINGSVILLE.

Back roads. Big rumors. No confirmed ETA.

KINGSVILLEPOPULATION: EVERYONE BUT JOSHBobbert says the station’s still open.

Inspired by the rural Kingsville, Maryland where KC grew up, this is the Kingsville of Wednesdays Without Josh: back roads, familiar faces and stories that get bigger every time someone tells them. The Citgo is the hub for everyone coming and going. Sooner or later, everyone passes Bobbert’s counter.

ALL THE NEWS THAT DELAYS HIS ARRIVALCommunity edition / From the show’s fictional town
Town news / Coming in the next couple of weeks

THE KIDS HAVE A LIST.
THE TOWN HAS CONCERNS.

Kingsville’s annual high school scavenger hunt returns soon. Students are thrilled. Everyone else has begun rehearsing “no, we don’t have one of those.”

It’s the most anticipated event on the students’ calendar and the least anticipated event at several local counters. This year’s annual high school scavenger hunt is expected in the next couple of weeks, with the exact date still to be announced in the story.

For the kids, it means teams, clues, photos and a brief claim to local glory. For the rest of Kingsville, it means being interrupted mid-sentence by someone holding a clipboard.

At The Citgo, Bobbert has prepared a sign reading “NO, JOSH DOES NOT COUNT AS A RARE LOCAL SIGHTING.” He expects to answer the question anyway.

“The kids love it. The town loses its mind. I’m just trying to sell someone a coffee.”— Bobbert, The Citgo counter, increasingly concerned

Josh has offered to help “for five minutes.” The Gazette has placed that statement in the opinion section.

Meet Bobbert.

THE CITGO / CURRENTLY ON SHIFT

He works the counter.
He knows too much.

Bobbert Roberts is 37. His parents were hippies—and high when they named him. He works at The Citgo to supplement his other job as a teaching aide at the community college, assisting Peter Lev—known to everyone as Master P Lev. Josh stops for coffee every morning. He knows Josh’s order, his routine and exactly how long “leaving now” can take. He’s working two jobs and getting nowhere. What most people don’t know: he wants to be a writer. His uncle Dobbert Roberts had a different artistic ambition: he played the Doctor in Just What the Doctor Ordered, his first and only acting role. He’s working two jobs and getting nowhere. What most people don’t know: he wants to be a writer.

His friends keep stealing beef jerky, and Bobbert keeps getting in trouble for it. Between the missing snacks, the manager’s questions and Josh’s daily coffee stop, it’s rarely a quiet shift.

The station is where the town crosses paths: kids coming and going, neighbors trading news and Josh stretching a morning coffee into a whole conversation.

He doesn’t need a tracker. He can still see Josh’s car.

“He said he was leaving. Then he asked about the hot food.”

Kingsville field notes / Places everyone talks about

Quiet roads.
Loud stories.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE / QUESTIONABLE SOURCES

A somewhat rural town with plenty of room between houses and very little distance between a rumor and Bobbert hearing it. These are the places behind the stories.

The crossroads

The Citgo.

Everybody stops here. Nobody’s just stopping here.

Morning coffee, fuel, snacks, rides and the latest version of what happened last night. The station is Kingsville’s unofficial arrivals and departures board. Bobbert works the counter. Josh gets coffee here every morning.

Overheard at the counter

“You hear what happened back at the factory?” is how a coffee purchase becomes a twenty-minute conversation. Bobbert usually heard it already. His friends were here buying absolutely none of the beef jerky.

The name that stuck

“The crematorium.”

Wrong history. Extremely confident teenagers.

The kids found an old abandoned factory and decided it must have been a crematorium. It was actually a rendering plant. By the time anyone corrected them, the nickname had become permanent.

How the story usually goes

A few kids throw a party back there. Somebody tells somebody. The party gets too big, the noise carries and someone calls the cops. By morning, everyone at The Citgo has a different estimate of how many people were there.

“It was only a few people.”
— Every version of the story, initially

Former use: rendering plant.
Current use in town conversation: dramatic exaggeration.
The other local legend

The Nike silos.

Cold War leftovers. Teenage confidence.

The abandoned Nike missile silos are another place the kids sneak into. Every group comes back with a story. The next group has already heard a more dramatic version.

What makes it back to the station

There is always someone who claims they went farther than everyone else. There is always someone else who says that person stayed by the car. Bobbert hears both accounts before lunch.

“I’m telling you, you had to be there.”
— Someone who is unclear about whether they were there

The stories travel faster than Josh.

Still Open Video.

The video rental store that should have closed decades ago. Still holding on. Still displaying the poster for Bobbert’s uncle Dobbert Roberts’s first—and only—acting role.

Another Kingsville counter / The seafood store

Ask Me About My Crabs.

Crabs, fresh seafood and a name that gets straight to the point. Kingsville’s seafood shop sits near Jerusalem Road on the story map, just east of the village.

All About that Brim.
Stick With Me.

A wide-brim-hat haberdashery and a walking-stick store, side by side southeast of Kingsville village. One handles the shade. The other gives you something to lean on.

The Bobbert wire / News travels through the coffee line

Before town hears it,
the counter hears it.

“Everyone says they’re heading somewhere. Funny how they all end up here first.”

The shared history / Before the microphones

The farm was sold.
The stories weren’t.

HUBER’S FARM / FROM THE CREW’S MEMORIES

Long before the podcast, we all worked on the produce farm. Huber’s Farm was a real place, eventually sold. It still comes up a lot. Some places stay in the conversation long after you’ve left them.

Then / Huber’s Farm

The October night shift.

People used to try to steal pumpkins at night in October. We would hide at the back of the field by the tree line, gathered around a fire, waiting for someone to try. When they did, we’d chase them off.

Produce-farm work by day. Pumpkin watch after dark. It’s one of those stories that keeps finding its way back into the conversation.

The part that stays with you

The field. The tree line. The fire. Waiting together for something to happen. Years later, the setting has changed and there are microphones, but the group still has plenty to talk about while they wait.

GARAGE.
FINISHED SPACE.
UNFINISHED ARRIVAL.
Now / Where the podcast records

Yes, it’s a garage.
It’s a nice garage.

The podcast is recorded in Huber’s garage, which has been turned into a nice finished space. This is where Huber, Chris “The Night Ranger” and KC settle in with the microphones, the old stories and the empty seat.

When we say “the studio,” this is the place. Huber’s garage. Josh is still on his way.

One group. Plenty of history.

From the produce farm to Bobbert’s coffee counter to Huber’s finished garage: the old stories keep turning up in the new ones.
